Background removal on your device
This tool cuts the person out of a photo with a portrait matting model that runs inside your browser, not on a server. The model (about 6 MB) downloads once and is cached; after that it works offline. The result keeps hair and soft edges as a real alpha channel, so you can export a transparent PNG or WebP, or fill the background with white, blue, red or any colour and export a JPEG for forms that require a plain backdrop. Edge softness smooths the cut-out; the crop editor lets you frame the subject first.
Who needs this
ID and passport photos taken against a messy wall, product shots for marketplaces, profile pictures, presentations and stickers, and anyone who does not want to upload a personal photo to a background-removal service.
Remove background
Remove the background of portrait photos with an on-device AI matting model (MODNet). Everything runs in your browser: the model is downloaded once (about 6 MB) and your photos never leave your computer. Keep a transparent PNG, or fill the background with white, blue, red or any colour for ID and passport photos.
How it works

- Adjust the options — everything previews on your device.

Frequently asked questions
Does it work on objects and pets, or only people?
The model is trained on people and works best on portraits. Objects and animals with a clear outline often come out well; complex scenes with several subjects are not its strength.
Why does the first run take a few seconds?
The model and the WebAssembly runtime are downloaded on first use (about 20 MB in total) and then cached, so later runs take one or two seconds per photo.
Can I get the exact background colour my passport office wants?
Yes. Set Method to Colour, pick the shade (white, light grey or the colour named in the spec), export as JPG, then use the passport tool to crop to the official size and print a sheet.
Is the result good enough for e-commerce listings?
For single products on a contrasting background, usually yes. Check the edges at full size with the compare slider; a little edge softness hides most artefacts, and a white fill matches marketplace rules.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The matting model runs inside your browser with WebAssembly. Only the model file itself is downloaded (once, about 6 MB) and cached for next time.
What kind of photos work best?
Portraits: head-and-shoulders or full-body photos of one person against a reasonably distinct background. Fine hair and glass look best with a little edge softness.
How do I get a white background for an ID photo?
Switch Method to Colour, pick white (or the colour your form requires) and export as JPG. Combine with the Passport photo tool to crop to the official size.
